The concept
for this painting began with the idea that islands are
really orphans from the mainland. Monhegan Island is the
largest of a small group of islands located 12 miles off
the coast of Maine. In "Sea Orphan" you see a
young girl looking wistfully past the tip of Manana Island
just across the cove. It is not clear who the orphan is
but the figure is defiant, standing tall with arms folded.
I remember
sitting on this very spot, immersed in the tranquility
and innocence of Monhegan, only weeks before the 9/11.
I painted this study shortly after the one-year anniversary
of the attacks.

Sometimes
I find myself haunted by an image. I spoted this man
sitting on a bench in front of a store in Lambertville,
New Jersey. The combination of his expression and gesture
of his legs, along with the unusual Halloween decorations,
captured my attention.
